They provide convincing order numbers, reference company policies, and even crack a joke to win your employee's trust. But this isn’t a disgruntled customer it’s an AI-powered chatbot executing a phishing attack.
There would once have been a time that this sort of scenario would have been far fetched or something out of a movie. Not anymore! We’re living in an era where malicious actors no longer need to rely on broken grammar and generic scams, they don’t have to spend ages honing their skill or perfecting their technique.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, phishing has evolved into a highly targeted, dynamic, and disturbingly persuasive threat. Criminals are now using AI-driven tools to craft tailored messages and real-time conversations with frightening ease and speed that are not only harder to detect but far more effective.

How AI Has Supercharged Phishing
Traditional phishing attacks were generally, apart from the odd exceptions, fairly easy to spot for most people. You’d get a suspicious-looking email from a fake “bank,” full of typos and sketchy links. You could easily pick out that it was fake.

In advanced attacks, criminals combine AI chatbots with deepfake technology to leave voicemail messages or even join video calls impersonating executives or IT personnel putting even seasoned staff off guard.

The Real-World Business Risk
These sophisticated techniques are not just theoretical. Businesses, especially those in finance, healthcare, tech, and logistics are being actively targeted.
CEO Fraud (Business Email Compromise): An AI-generated email from a fake “CEO” instructs a junior accountant to urgently transfer funds.
Credential Harvesting: A chatbot posing as IT support asks staff to “verify” credentials to avoid being locked out during a fake system upgrade.
Supply Chain Exploits: A bot mimics a known vendor and requests a change in payment details or shares a link to a compromised invoice.
These aren’t just IT problems. They’re financial, reputational, and even legal disasters waiting to happen.

Despite billions invested in security software, the majority of successful cyber attacks stem from human error. Employees are busy, trusting, and often unaware of the sophistication behind modern threats.

Move beyond generic phishing simulations. Run real-world, scenario-based training that:

Includes spear-phishing examples tailored to your departments
Regularly evolves with emerging attack techniques
2. Implement Zero Trust Principles
Adopt a “never trust, always verify” mindset. This means:
Verifying requests through multiple channels (especially for financial or credential requests)
Not assuming internal communications are secure by default
3. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Everywhere
Even if credentials are stolen, MFA adds a critical layer of protection. Ensure it's required across all sensitive systems and services.
4. Deploy AI to Fight AI
Consider implementing AI-driven threat detection tools that:
Monitor communication patterns and flag anomalies
Analyse tone, urgency, and topic for suspicious content
Spot inconsistencies in bot-generated messages
